Noises

I happen to like hissing. I am too chicken to do it,but when I hear an audience member hiss at a dancer ( usually another bellydancer) I think it is cool. I also really like that rolling sound kind of like " vlllllllllllllll". Reminds me of a car engine.
I can zaghareet my ass off, and I will occasionally Yip. But I actually do have a signature sound, for real. It kind of sounds like a really high pitched "you". I think it sounds cool, and wonder if I overuse it, or if it sounds more like a redneck ye hawing at a Nascar race or something. These are the things that keep me up at night.( no,not really, I do have a soul).
I used to know a dancer that said the coolest things while she was watching a performance. She wouldn't make sounds, but made loud comments. It sounds obnoxious, but she was always saying what everyone else was thinking. If someone did a back bend or crazy drop, she would say something like "You're kidding", or "No Way". To know her personality was to understand that not only was she an amazing teacher, and a really fun person, but a complement coming from her was the real deal.

Noises. Just another thing I love about bellydance.

What sounds do you make?

I've never heard said hissing, and I'm quite curious now. Lol
I guess I'm pretty lame... I only Zhagareet and Yip. Occasionally there's an OPA!!!!! It's a good sound. :-p

I sometimes do a Tejano rolling of the tongue followed by an EiyEiy Ahaaaa!!
But I prefer the Zhagareet :)

Hissing doesn't seem to have caught on over here (UK), at least not in my region.

I've never got the hang of zaghareeting, but I do a mean 'aiaiaiaiaiaiaiYIP!' which carries nicely across a hall full of people.

I also favour an approving 'aiwa' for those slow, sensual moves where anything shriekier would spoil the mood.

I've heard something said over here that I can't remember right now for the life of me...
I only Zagareet if other's are doing it - I need to practice a lot more, but I do love to YIP! :)
I know a lot of dancers can't handle it as they say it distracts, but I feel like to a performer it can give that little confidence boost - and it does!!
